CHAPTER 19

“You’re not supposed to lick it, Brutus,” Harriet said.

“But it itches!” her partner lamented.

“I know,” she said, softening. With her it also itched, and she was having just as hard a time not licking the injured spots. But if she wanted her perfectly groomed fur to stay as pristinely white as it had always been, this was a sacrifice she had to make. So in spite of the temptation to apply her raspy tongue to the itchy spots, she had refrained from going against Vena’s strict instructions.

“How long do you think it will take to get rid of this thing?” asked Brutus.

They were in Marge and Tex’s backyard, relaxing underneath the rose bushes, their favorite spot.

“I have no idea,” she admitted. “But I don’t think it will be long. Otherwise Vena would have said.”

“You know, I think I’ll have to revise my view on vets in general and Vena in particular. She does seem to have her uses.”

“She does,” Harriet admitted. Loath as she was to give credit to the woman she had always viewed as a butcher of the most vicious kind, she had to admit she seemed to know what she was doing.

“I’ll bet they’ll get us to stay out here until we’re cured,” said Brutus moodily. “Well, if that happens I’m out of here, sweetie pie.”

“They’re allowing us the use of the downstairs floor,” Harriet said, reminding her mate of Marge’s words. “Provided we don’t go anywhere near any of them.”

“Mh,” Brutus grumbled.

“And look at the bright side: they’ll clean the whole house with bleach. That’s nice, isn’t it? I happen to like the smell of bleach.”

“Who doesn’t? Bleach just may be the best invention man made since he discovered the wheel. But she shouldn’t have said that thing about staying away from them, sugar plum. That wasn’t very nice.”

“Look at it from their point of view: they don’t want to get the same stuff on them we got on us.” She still blamed Clarice, or Shanille, and was determined to get to the bottom of who had transferred this horrible fungus to her precious person.

“I guess,” he said reluctantly.

They mused on their situation, heads on their front paws, and generally enjoying each other’s company, when suddenly they saw a man appear they had never seen before. He was dressed in a tracksuit, like the ones Gran liked to wear, and was behaving very suspiciously indeed.

“Who’s that?” she asked, gesturing toward the newcomer.

“No idea. Maybe a friend of Marge and Tex?”

“I doubt it. We know all of their friends, and I’ve never seen this guy before.”

“Maybe he’s one of Marge’s customers at the library and he’s returning a book after hours?”

The man was checking the back of the house, looking it up and down, with a particular interest in the upstairs windows, one of which was open in the tilt position.

“What’s that bulge in his pants?” asked Brutus.

The man did indeed have a noticeable bulge at the back of his pants. The shape looked familiar as well.
